Oil Seeds

Oil seeds: India is the largest producer of oil- seeds In the world. Different oil seeds are grown covering approximately 12 per cent of the total cropped areas of the country. Main oil- seeds produced in India are groundnut, mustard, coconut, sesamum (til), soyabean, castor seeds, cotton seeds, linseed and sunflower.

Among the nine oil seed crops grown in the country, seven are edible oils (soybean, groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, sunflower, sesame, safflower and niger) and two are of non-edible oils (castor and linseed) used as raw material in the production of soap, cosmetics and ointments.

  • While linseed and mustard are rabi crops, sesamum is a kharif crop in North India and a rabi crop in South India.
  • Castor is both a rabi and a kharif crop.
  • India ranks first in the production of most of the minor oil seeds (castor, niger, sunflower and sesame).  .
  • Oil seeds producing states in India are : Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana etc.
